A Mosaic Sprinkle
Madaba , Also known as "The City of Mosaics", Madaba and its hinterlands were repeatedly mentioned in the Old Testament. Between the 4th and 7th centuries AD, the prosperous ecclesiastical center of Madaba produced one of the world’s finest collections of Byzantine mosaics, many fine examples of which are well preserved. The chief attraction in this city is a wonderfully vivid, sixth century Byzantine mosaic map showing Egypt, Jerusalem and the Holy Land, preserved in St. George Church. Visiting Madaba’s mosaic wonders won’t be enough without passing by Mount Nebo, the memorial of Moses and the presumed site of the prophet's death and burial place. From a platform in front of the church built by the early Christians in 393 AD, you will enjoy a breathtaking view across the Jordan Valley & the Dead Sea. The church is also famous for having been visited by the pilgrim Ageria and where Jeremiah saved the Ark of the Covenant from Nebuchadnezzar in 588 – 587 BC and, for its wonderfully preserved mosaics.
After seeing those wonderful mosaics you’ll be transferred to learn how to make them and take your handmade piece home ! many workshops in Madaba were held to support hundreds of families through out the hand work of their freelance sons and daughters the majority of whom suffer handicaps. The tour will end by visiting La Storia complex , a special museum that features an exhibition of tableaux billed as depictions of the religious, historical and cultural highlights in the heritage of Jordan. The museum contains several models that represent different historical periods, some of which portray aspects of life in villages and cities of the Kingdom including a recreation of a traditional souq with its many tradespeople.
